Acacia
pycnostachya: is a rare species from a small area in the Northern
Tablelands of New South Wales. This magnificent Wattle grows into a tall,
spreading shrub or small tree. The sickle shaped phyllodes are blue-green and
complement the golden rod flowers that burst into life in mid-spring. The area
where this species occurs has been dedicated as a Nature Reserve and is
administered by the National Parks and Wildlife Service.
Acacia pycnostachya is virtually unknown in cultivation but has great
horticultural potential. Of the 40 or so Acacia species cultivated at
Yallaroo this is one of our favourites. The species could be cultivated as a
vibrant “stand alone” specimen plant or as a component of shelterbelts and
windbreaks.
Both foliage and flowers are both attractive features.
Propagation is by seed and possibly cuttings.
