Pelican
(Pelecannus conspicillatus): Has been described as an impressive
black and white bird with huge bill and bill-pouch. There is no way that you
could mistake a Pelican for any other bird. To see a Pelican landing is to be
reminded of the old Sunderland Flying Boats landing at Rose Bay in Sydney
Harbour (that puts us in our historical context).
Pelicans feed on fish and will often congregate in coastal areas where fish
are cleaned. On the Central Coast, of NSW, Pelicans are fed daily and have
become a tourist attraction. This is the place to see wall-to-wall Pelicans.
They are found throughout Australia where there is suitable habitat. A huge
breeding event is triggered when Lake Eyre fills in Central Australia.

relatives.
