Week 2 July 2001: Heavy snow on some parts of the Northern Tablelands. We could see a light dusting of snow on the hills surrounding Yallaroo. We did have 16 mm of rain that was more than welcome.
Spent a couple of days visiting our daughter and family at Taree. On the way down we passed through a wide area covered in dense (for Australia) snow.
Our daughter has a rather splendid Grevillea growing in her garden. Grevillea Little Miss Muffet is a small hybrid and at this time is covered with masses of pink flowers. We collected plenty of cuttings and in the fullness of time this Grevillea will join our collection.
On our return we spent some time digging holes and planting in various gardens. We are working on our new Lawn Garden. This area will absorb a large number of plants so plenty of seeds and cuttings are being placed on the propagating bench.
Received a call from a distressed gardener. He is establishing a native garden in Armidale that is attracting native birds. Unfortunately the neighbor’s cats are taking advantage of this food source. Both domestic and feral cats take a huge toll on native wildlife. All we could suggest is that he cultivates plenty of prickly Grevilleas and Hakeas and also talk to the neighbors about responsible cat ownership.
Saw three Wedge-tailed Eagles soaring around this week. These magnificent birds frequently ride the thermals above Yallaroo.
