Week 2 November 2000: Another busy week at Yallaroo. Just as well we are retired otherwise there would be no time to go to work. Spent a day at a cut flower farm near Guyra north of Armidale. Tulips and Iris are the main crops but the owner is diversifying into Waratahs. Three varieties have been planted including the interesting Telopea Wirrimbirra White. Nearly 300 Waratahs have been planted. We will monitor their progress with great interest. Visited a nursery on the way home and of course plants were purchased. Grevillea laurifolia and G. repens were amongst our purchases. Both are reliable ground covers. This takes our Grevillea collection to over 120 species, varieties and hybrids. Still involved in consolidation planting in a garden bed where we lost some young plants during our dry and frosty winter. Talked to a neighbour about frog pond construction. Our three ponds are very successful with at least four frog species making themselves at home. A visit from Bingara Garden Club this week. Once again we had an enjoyable morning showing gardeners our garden and swapping horticultural information. Grey kangaroos are feeding on our mown area each afternoon. Sometimes we have at least 12 visitors. Many birds are nesting in the garden. Swallows, Yellow-faced Honeyeaters, White-eared Honeyeaters and Blue Wrens are all taking advantage of our dense plantings.
